Democratic Leadership Caves on Trade

On May 10th the Democratic leadership, Pelosi and Rangel in particular, announced 'deal' they had made with the Bush Administration- without consulting fellow Democrats or constituents. This deal not only moves several disastrous "free" trade agreements forward but also is intended to "pave the way" for a renewal of Fast Track.

The Democratic leadership bargained away the strong mandate they received from the voters in 2006 to fundamentally reassess our trade policy - and got little in return. The campaign to build citizen pressure is key in making Congress hold the line as the leadership falters.

In Mexico, the entrance of cheap, subsidized U.S. corn under NAFTA resulted in more than 2 million small corn producers losing their livelihoods in the last 12 years.
